Colville Primary

English Reading

At Colville, we highly value the importance of reading for enjoyment as well as ensuring our children to excel. Daily, children take home a book and complete their reading journal. Two reading intervention teachers deliver targeted lessons to selected Year 1-3 pupils.

In Key Stage 2, the majority of children take part in large group reading lessons, where they access texts from a range of genres across the year. Teachers model how to answer comprehension questions, take small groups and provide children time to work both with their talk partners and independently throughout each sequence of guided reading lessons.

Children are assigned a levelled text until they become an independent reader. For levelled texts, we use a variety of schemes including the Oxford University Press (some with a phonics focus), Oxford Reading Tree and Rigby Star as well as classic fiction and non-fiction texts. We do not follow one reading scheme, instead believing that children benefit from a broad selection of books, which include a variety of authors. Once children are independent readers, they make their own choice of reading book.

Through the week, each year group has guided reading lessons. The texts are carefully chosen to ensure children cover a range of texts: fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama. Some texts may change through the year.
